For the second time I received an highest level emergency alert via Bavarian or German agencies via cell broadcast: for the second time and alert that was just a test alert. Result: I changed my settings: for the rest of my stay in Germany: no cell broadcast at all will be able to reach me: dear German/Bavarian authorities: you got it wrong: I'm not your Unterthan. You just ruined cell broadcasts for people like me.

Moving means to destroy

Moving out of the room I'm sitting in right now means to destroy me as the person sitting there right now: even returnig there after just a few minutes: I wouldn't be able to take the exactly same position there again, the original one will be destroyed.

Moving from studying, researching, teaching, administrating texts, topics, institutions related to renaissance intellectual history and renaissance philosophy, plus some IT stuff:  to performing (publicly or - way more probable: not publicly) harpsichord music (15th to 21st century, on revival harpsichords only) : will destroy my relationship with studying, researching, teaching, administrating texts, topics, institutions related to renaissance intellectual history and renaissance philosophy, plus some IT stuff.

Moving from Munich to Bari will transform me into a tourist whenever I will return (for some days or weeks) to Munich. It will destroy my status as a non-tourist in Munich. (I feel like a tourist in  my home region [Palatinate] already now, but for other reasons [transformations of villages into commuter towns, plus a dying or already dead language {my native one}].)

Moving from Munich to Bari will transform me from a person who lived for decades in a Munich appartment I expected to die in into a person living in a Bari apartment I hope to die in.

Moving also means to create something new.

Not all destructions are bad. Though most of them do come with some pain.

I've never been inclined to nostalgia.

I want that change, very much!

But some destruction aspects of that change: sometimes do hurt somewhat.

My phone updated to Android "Pie" (9).

The advantages for me are minimal.
But anyway: the blogger app for Android now tells me it's not made for this version of Android.

And indeed: formatting options and structuring options are not exactly perfect.

This post here is just a test whether I can continue to use that app at least for barebones posts.

In the early hours of today I left G+ . (To avoid a potentially chaotic exit.)

It was a good social network. With circles (somewhat like the "aspects" in diaspora), with collections (permitting to post to public with the option of an opt-out for the readers), with groups, and with great people and great discussions and other interactions. Thanks go to all who made this possible, thanks go to all who participated!

Google's closing it down 2019-04-02 for ordinary people came as an unwelcome surprise.

So wie's aussieht wird noch vor dem Ende von G+ (2019-04-02) die Mitgliedschaft des Vereinigten Königreichs in der EU enden (2019-03-29).

Beides wohl auf unschöne Weise.

Was bedeutet ein no-deal #Brexit aus meiner lokalen Sicht?

Kein Zugang zu Marmite mehr. (Egal.)

Möglicherweise Verteurung von Schottischem Whiskey. (Schmerzhaft.)

Ende des Erasmus-Austauschs von Studierenden mit UK. (Nun ja.)

Völlig unklare Bedingungen für Studierende die künftig aus dem UK zu uns kommen wollen und für Studierende von uns die da hin wollen, da die künftige vermutliche 90-Tage-in-180-Tagen-Visumsfreiheit für Geschäftsleute und Tourismus passt, nicht aber für Studierende. (Sehr störend.)

Unzureichend gekläre (oder in ihrer Klärung unzureichend kommunizierte) Bedingungen für die Kooperation zwischen LMU und Cambridge. (Störend.)

Anlässlich einer Diskussion dazu ob Solaris in  Stanisław Lem's gleichnamigem Roman in der Lage sei unsterbliche Objekte zu schaffen (Ergebnis: die Besucher haben keinen Dauerbestand nach dem Tod der sterblichen Besuchten [cf. Gibarian], und selbst Solaris selbst ist nicht unsterblich [weil auch Sonnen nicht unsterblich sind ->  e.g. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauptreihe#Lebensdauer] . )

habe ich folgendes überlegt:

Ewiges Leben, das heisst nicht Jahrtausende, sondern Tausende von Dutzenden von Milliarden von Jahren, und darüber ewig hinaus. Wer will sowas? Welche Abwechslung? Was an nie Berührtem zu berühren, oder berührt davon zu werden? Über all die Zeit: was überraschend? Was neu?   Extrem unmenschlich scheint's.   Sind wir wirklich so im Ebenbilde Gottes geschaffen, dass wir solches aushalten, gar erhoffen sollten?? Verschwinden von Spuren des Alten, Werkzeug für Neues

Heute Vormittag wurden aus dem Keller unseres Dienstgebäudes (Ludwigstraße 31, 80539 München) die orangenen stählernen Garderobenschränke entfernt. Sie waren (soweit mir bekannt) lange ungenutzt, und die letzte Spur, das letzte Überbleibsel der Zeit als in selbigem Dienstgebäude mehrere "philosophische" Bibliotheken (darunter auch unsre ehemalige) untergebracht waren.

Und heute Nachmittag werde ich mit einer Schere rüber zum unterrichten in's Hauptgebäude gehen. Nein, nichts schlimmes. Nur um Klebeband abzuschneiden zum Aufhängen von Zetteln, die kundtun, dass mein Lektürekurs und Seminar "Aristoteles' zoologische Schriften, mit einem Blick auf neuere Biologie" in einen neuen, größeren Raum gewechselt ist (wegen Überfüllung des bisherigen Unterrichtsraums). Ist das, soweit ich mich erinnern kann, erste mal, dass mir derlei im Hauptgebäude passiert ist. Und ich weiss nicht, wer oder was es ist, was da so unerwartet populär ist: Philosophie? Aristoteles? Die LMU München? Zoologie? Zoologische Philosophie? Philosophie der Zoologie? Viecher? (Mich selbst kann ich, denke ich, ausschließen: ich bin auch dieses Semester nicht schöner als ich es in vorigen Semestern war.)

Centuria I, Experimentum 47 : to preblog or to postblog?

Blog first, teach later? Or better: teach first, blog later?

The entry level course I teach this semester on "Aristotelian" zoology, and its receptions, and other historiae animalium, and 21st century biology ("Aristoteles' zoologische Schriften, mit einem Blick auf neuere Biologie") intersects with my German language blog used to collect material and refelctions and discussions for my project on how to deal with the variety of natural things, and especially animals (Tiergeschichtliches : Materialsammlungen, Meditationen, Vorarbeiten, und Arbeiten: zu meinem Projekt zu Historiae Animalium). And the same will be true for an advanced seminar I intend to teach next semester on collected natural things, naturalia made artificialia ("Gesammelte Naturdinge").

And now I'm wondering: how to proceed: if there is a topic I have text (especially: text of mine) on, and which is scheduled to be dealt with  in the seminar one of the next days or weeks (normally: some 7 to 0 days after I have that preparatory text of mine ready):  

Should I post that text of mine on that blog prior to the seminar session, so that I have the chance to benefit from corrections and discussion and additions I might receive as comments to such a blog post? In that case I'd have the chance to enter the lecture hall used for that seminar with considerably better preparation than I'd have without such corrections and discussion and additions. (Improvements due to students' input/reactions/critique during the seminar session then would result in comments of mine [giving credit to the students] to such a blog post.)

 Or should I post what I will post only after it's been discussed in the seminar (and hopefully been improved by the students' input/reactions/critique)? This would have at least the benefit, that students reading the last/most current  blog posts on that blog prior to the seminar session might be a bit less bored during the seminar session. And I have a good chance to improve my preparatory text before it first "hits" the students.

(No, the option to make reading the last/most current  blog posts on that blog prior to the seminar session does not exist.)

As of now I'm tending to "teach first, blog later". But I'd be grateful for your input/advise/tales/ etc. What, according to your experiences and opinion is better (especially: more beneficial for the students): blog first, teach later? teach first, blog later?

Electrons for one reader only?

The day before yesterday I received a letter from my publisher, telling me that in the whole year of 2015 exactly 1 eBook of my 2014 German language introduction to Renaissance philosophy has been sold. 

Does this mean that at least for books in that genre the ebook is (almost) dead, and print rules?

(This is not about the "extended electronic version of this book" to which you can get access once you have made plausible to the publisher that you are in possession of a regularrily bought copy - electronic or on paper - of that book.)

Geisteswissenschaftler sind wie laichende Fische und derlei: bei einem/einer in den Tausenden von Studierenden die wir unterrichten/unterrichtet haben/unterrichten werden die Fackel zum Weitertragen entzündet zu haben: reicht schon.

Centuria I, Experimentum 43 : Linsen

Ein Linsengericht

36 Stunden vor dem Essen: 500g braune Linsen mit 2 Lorbeerblättern und 5 Pimentkörnern und 1/8 Liter sanfter pfälzer Rotweinessig und ca. 1 Liter Wasser in zugedeckter Schale quellen lassen. Gelegentlich nachgucken ob zusätzliches Wasser nötig ist, und alle paar Stunden sanft umrühren.

Gequollene Linsen mit 1 Suppengrün (in dessen Sellerie und Persilienwurzel Nelken gestochen sind), 1 Schuss Tabasco, 1 Prise Muskatblüte gemalen, 1 gehäufter Esslöffel grobem Salz, 5 Mokkalöffel grober Rohrzucker, 1 Schuss Olivenöl und so reichlich Wasser, dass das Suppengrün gut schwimmt in Schnellerkochtopf ca. 90 Minuten kochen lassen.
Derweil ca. 700g Entrecôte in knapp ohrgroße Fetzen schneiden und mit  schwarzen Pfeffer, Tsiperifery, Kubebenpfeffer (auf feinem Salz gemörsert) und geriebener Muskatnuss würzen und kühlstellen.

Suppengrün aus Linsen entfernen und Linsen abgießen und warmstellen.

Fleisch in großer Pfanne in Olivenöl scharf anbraten. Wenn's angebräunt ist: Linsen dazugeben, umrühren, 1/4 Liter Cognac dazu, unter ständigem Umrühren warten bis der Cognac verdampft ist. In Schüssel geben und servieren.

Invisible Students

We have a master in mediaeval and renaissance studies (Masterstudiengang "Mittelalter- und Renaissancestudien). There is a compulsory methods seminar for first year students of this master. The number of our first years this time is something like 13. There are two "slots" of this compulsory methods seminar. One is on Monday, and one is on Tuesday. Both of these slots are/were scheduled to start this week. And I was present on both occasions.

  On Monday there were 3 students present. So there should have been some 10 students present today (Tuesday). All of these 10 students were completely invisible and and none of them did make any noise, uttered any word audible to me for all of the ca. 30 minutes I was present in that room.

I hope they will be better visible, and louder, next Tuesday.
